should you train differently as you age?

This pic is my first #triathlon race when I decided in my 20s to chase the number on the scale through endurance exercise. If I could tell this woman all the stuff I’ve learned now.

Do you remember your 20s? Do you remember what exercises you were doing or if you were exercising at all?

In my 20s, I was attending the University of Hawai’i at Manoa getting my Bachelors in Business Administration.

I had my first boyfriend ever (who is now my husband) and with a boyfriend, came my own body insecurity. So for the first time in my life, I started to exercise.

I did a shit ton of cardio videos (Richard Simmon’s Sweating to the Oldies) and I lived at the UH track walking and jogging.

I did this every day. Then twice a day. And then I started to cut out foods and then I joined Jenny Craig.

In 7 months, I lost 45lbs. I went from 171lbs to 125lbs. I was starving. I was miserable. My period stopped. My hair was falling put. I had bruises everywhere. But, dam I was skinny!

Fast forward to my 40s… I’m wiser, I’ve done a ton of self work and I 💯 percent know that food and fitness must be DRASTICALLY different now than what I did in my 20s and my 30s.

Some will beg to differ. In fact, many articles confirm that we shouldn’t train any differently than when we were in our 20s, that we are just as capable now as we were then, and we should just continue as normal.

This is true, to a point. Yes we are capable, very capable in fact, and most of the time we should workout as normal, that is until we can’t.

Entering our 40s throws so much stuff into the mix that we need to be smarter about food, exercise and recovery!

At the age of 44, I have experienced the full gamut of these challenges, so I speak from experience as both a trainer and a woman in this age group.

Many of my clients are women over 40, and I see first-hand how life has thrown a curve ball their way despite their best efforts at exercising, managing stresses and being mindful about nutrition.
