fat loss formula – part 4 alcohol

Fat Loss Series Part 4: Alcohol!

I will never be the personal trainer that says you can’t drink or eat something. It’s not my philosophy; never has been and never will be. Why? Because I practice what I preach. Yes, I eat chocolate and I love to have a glass of wine with my friends, but I also know my limits, I train hard and I eat a balanced diet.

So, when I am asked by my clients if they can drink alcohol while trying to lose body fat, I tell them sure they can, but to keep in mind that any alcohol intake will slow down their fat loss.

Here’s why:
Normally your body burns your fat to get the energy it needs, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to lose fat. The problem with drinking alcohol while you’re following a fat loss plan, is that booze provides a quicker, more accessible form of energy for your body than fat does. And, no matter how much we might wish it were different: if alcohol is so much easier for your body to turn into fuel compared to fat, your body will always choose that easier route (burn alcohol and not body fat).

This isn’t the green light to open a bottle of wine tonight or slam 8 espresso martinis after work! Moderation & alcohol tracking is important!!!

I used the chart above for a 6-ounce serving of wine to teach you how to track alcohol as either carbs, fats or a combo of both.

You can use the same formula for any alcohol, but, keep in mind that you definitely should be measuring out your alcohol intake and not “eye balling” it.

Use a food scale! If you are out, then use the travel scale that I use! And don’t be ashamed about it – if you’ve got goals, you gotta do what you gotta do!

Here’s the travel scale link:

And here are some tips to moderate your alcohol when trying to lose body fat:

1. Avoid high fat meals/snacks if you’re having a drink.
2. If you drink, don’t go overboard. Plan ahead and stick to that!
3. Pick a healthier drink option. Stick with clear spirits or wine!
4. Hydrate! Drink water between drinks.

I don’t drink often but do enjoy an occasional drink when on #datenight or out with friends.

Do you drink alcohol? What’s your fav drink?
